Email #1: The Disappearing Boy

Subject line: Is your son suddenly starting to disappear?

Greetings,

Is the boy you have known for a decade changing before your eyes?

If your son is between 9 and 13, you may be seeing the first signs of one of life’s major shifts. His body is changing, his scent is shifting, and his voice is cracking. But there’s an unfamiliar tension at home too. He rolls his eyes, challenges you, or disappears into silence or screens.

A lot of us parents feel a sense of urgency when our sons approach adolescence. That is why I am so excited to bring my friend and colleague, Miki Dedijer, to speak to our us. [Insert a short sentence on how we know one another].

Miki is an experienced guide in cultivating a local, cultured rite of passage for boys (mikidedijer.com). He will be offering his Grassroots Rite of Passage Masterclass, a free 60-minute online workshop, for us on [Date of Workshop] at [Time of Workshop].

One reason why Miki offers this is so we learn to recognize that the signs you’re seeing in your son are not problems to be fixed with more discipline or convincing. Miki will show us how they are signs of an approaching threshold, a time to engage others in building an authentic, local, grassroots rite of passage within our own communities.

Email #2: The Urgency You Feel

Subject line: That friction in your home? It’s a threshold.

Greetings,

When your son slams his door or retreats into total silence, your first instinct might be panic, frustration, or to double down on discipline.

But the urgency you’re with is not a sign that something is wrong with your son, or that you are failing. His boyhood is coming to an end, and he is transforming before your eyes as he approaches the threshold to early adulthood.

To help us navigate this stage of your son’s life , Miki Dedijer offers us his Grassroots Rite of Passage Masterclass, a free, live 60-minute workshop on [Date of Workshop] at [Time of Workshop].

I wanted to bring Miki to you because [Insert brief personal note, e.g., his insights completely changed how I look at teenage boys].

He’s crafted this online teaching to support you in moving out of uncertainty and provide a clear case for steady action that engages wider circles in the maturation of your son. You will learn reasons to stop reacting to the tension and flaring moods, and start asking others for help in guiding him through a rite of passage.

Email #3: The Architecture of Initiation

Subject line: Where do you even begin? (Parents of boys 9–13)

Greetings,

You might be already be curious about rites of passage, but wonder: “Where do I even begin?”. It’s with this question in mind that I’m hosting Miki Dedijer and his Grassroots Rite of Passage Masterclass, a 60-minute, free, online workshop on [Date of Workshop] at [Time of Workshop].

Together, we are going to explore:

  • Rites of Passage in Modern Life: How the architecture of initiation applies to your household today.
  • The 10 Signals of Change: Subtle (and not so subtle) behavioral shifts in your son, and how they are commonly mistaken for bad behavior.
  • Why this isn’t the time to step away, or leave him to his own devices, but engage others to guide him through his transformation in a communal rite of passage.

Email #4: Grassroots Rite of Passage

Subject line: A communal Initiation of Your Son

Greetings,

It’s hard to think of a more potent and needed form of culture work than the initiating young boys into the full bloom of their needed humanity.

Miki Dedijer has an incredibly compelling take on this: grassroots rites of passage. It finds its place in between the three options modern parents seem to face:

  • Option #1: Doing nothing and leaving their sons to the screens and the algorithms.
  • Option #2: The lonely and fraught attempt to initiate their sons themselves .
  • Option #3: Handing them off to facilitators they likely don’t know a professionally run event.

Instead, Miki suggests democratizing the process and inviting the wider community in and burdening them with most of the responsibility for the thing.

If you are a parent of a boy approaching adolescence, even if they’re years away, or know parents who are, I urge you to attend or spread the word.

Miki has been labouring to live out his form of culture work over the past decades, including a lot of work with young boys and crafting rites of passage for his two sons.

He offers his decades of learnings in his Grassroots rite of passage workshop.

Miki’s Bio

Miki Dedijer is a facilitator of community-based rites of passage for boys, drawing on his background as an ecologist, permaculture practitioner, storyteller, and father.

After recognizing the absence of traditional rituals and communal support while raising his own sons on a farm in rural Sweden, Miki dedicated himself to restoring meaningful initiation experiences rooted in nature and local relationships.

He has guided fathers over several decades, and developed and led programs that bring together families, mentors, and young people for nature-based learning, ceremony, and collective support, emphasizing that every boy’s transition into adulthood is best nurtured by a circle of caring adults and real engagement with the land.

Miki holds a degree in Ecology, Evolution and Behavior from Princeton University, and was for 20 years an  environmental journalist and award-winning documentary filmmaker across four continents, focusing on how our relationship to nature affects our communal and personal health.
